UNDERRATED ACTORS who deserve some love

Alison Janney

For years, actor Alison Janney played supporting roles. Heck, she was so good at it that she won an Emmy for her supporting role in the hit TV series The West Wing. The producers of that popular TV series then upgraded her character and she was "upgraded" to a leading actress Emmy award a few years later.
But, it's her big screen characters that seem to stick in people's memory. She was the quirky school principal with a penchant for writing sleazy romance novels in 10 Things I Hate About You. She was Jennifer Aniston's no-nonsense big sister in the Object of My Affection, and she was the sarcastic trailer park hair dresser in Drop Dead Gorgeous (somebody find that DVD!). If supporting roles was an artform, Janney may well be its muse.

Joan Cusack

She was Melanie Griffith's best friend in "Working Girl" and then Julia Robert's best friend in "Runaway Bride". She's the eternal best friend of all leading ladies, Joan Cusack.
Nobody else could do supporting roles like her , and probably nobody else ever will. And it helps that you have an equally talented brother in the form of actor John Cusack. Everyone needs a Joan Cusack to knock some sense into our heads/carry our wedding train/be a shoulder to cry on. Don't you agree?

Gillian Anderson

I must say that Miss Dana Scully of X-Files fame has been playing delicious off-the-beaten-path roles since her the immensely popular TV series closed shop. An example is her turn as a call girl with a heart of gold in 1998's The Mighty, which was about a sickly child genius and starred Sharon Stone and Kieren Culkin . More recently, Anderson played in the Last King of Scotland, opposite James McAvoy and Forest Whitaker. We always knew that Scully would go far.

Rupert Everett

What ever happened to this guy? He was fabulous as Julia Roberts' level-headed sidekick in My Best Friend's Wedding. Then came the more butch role of Inspector Gadget's enemy. Film producers gave him meatier roles for An Ideal Husband, which was based on an Oscar Wilde classic, and later in Stage Beauty which he played opposite Claire Danes and Billly Crudup. More recently, Everett became the voice of Prince Charming in the last two Shrek movies. Wherever you are Mr Everett, you're still a helluva actor!
