Actors Play Against Typecast in Crash
---------------------------------------------------------

EMOTIONAL SCENE: These two characters hated each other at the start of the movie. Later Matt Dillon (right) ends up saving Thandie Newton's life.

Aiyo. Sandra Bullock blurting racist remarks about 'hommies' who only want to break into her home. An Hispanic female cop making fun of the way an Asian Chinese woman pronounces the word break (she pronounces the 'r' like an 'l'). Matt Dillon playing another cop who stops a black couple driving just cause they're, well, black. A Persian family living in LA mistaken to be Arabs and everyone thinks they are terrorists.

My God, the racial tension in the movie 'Crash' is everywhere. It deserves the Academy award nomination for Best Picture. It also manages to cast these famous actors against type. Hello, Brandon Fraser playing it serious as Bullock's district attorney husband? Matt Dillon playing a bigot? Sandra Bullock playing the tensed-up, freaking out wife of a guy who's running for office. And oh yes, Terrence Howard of 'Hustle and Flow' fame playing a timid TV show producer who can't say what he means. And of course the beautiful Thandie Newton looking ugly and mad all at once.

But seriously, it is a fucking good movie. Its strength lies in its ensemble of familiar faces. Dillon is nominated for Best Supporting Actor because of the movie. Watch the scene where he saves Thandie Newton from burning to death to know why.

And I believe the ratio of races in the film is almost accurate of what it is in LA now.

Go catch it man. Tell me what you think.
